Mistral AI
Mistral was founded in April 2023 by former Google DeepMind and Meta AI employees Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix.
The French company is the leading AI developer in Europe and competes with OpenAI, Google DeepMind AI, Anthropic and other AI developers. The company was valued at €5.8 billion in January 2025 and its growth has been one of the priorities of French President Emmanuel Macron, who launched a strategy to create AI champions in 2023 shortly after Mistral AI was founded.
As of January 2025, Mistral has raised more than €1 billion Euro, most recently securing €600 million in a funding round led by General Catalyst, the investment firm that previously backed Anthropic, Deliveroo and Airbnb.
Mistral's open source LLM chat models are named Mistral 7B, Mixtral and Codestral and in January, 2025, Mistral launched a new open source AI model for businesses named Mistral Small 3 that can run on a single GPU so that it can be installed locally in offices for privacy and reliability.
Mistral provides a free online AI chat assistant on chat.mistral.ai. The chat is available as an app on iPhone and Android devices.
